From July 15 to July 26, Harbin Institute of Technology hosted its “Intelligent Robot” Global Summer School as part of its 2024 Global Summer School series. Organized by the School of Undergraduate College and the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and supported by the National Key Laboratory of Robotics Technology and Systems, this year’s program drew 76 students from prestigious institutions worldwide, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology of China, Dalian University of Technology, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Shandong University, South China University of Technology, Moscow Bauman State Technical University, Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, University of Warwick in the UK, Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys, and Harbin Institute of Technology itself.
The summer school comprised three main components: specialized courses, academic lectures, and thematic competitions. Notable among the courses was a presentation by Professor Grattan, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and President of the International Metrology Institute, who discussed optical fiber sensing technologies in intelligent robotics. The lecture series featured prominent experts such as Professor Emmanuel Brousseau from Cardiff University, Professor Gao Haibo, Dean of the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology and a high-level talent recognized by the national program, and Professors Liu Rongqiang, Li Tianlong, and Ruan Qingyu from the same institution, along with Associate Professor Liao Zhirong, Deputy Editor of the leading manufacturing journal International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture from the University of Nottingham, UK. These experts shared insights on the latest technologies and trends in intelligent robotics.
Beyond the academic sessions, participants competed in the Harbin Institute of Technology “Intelligent Robot” Global Summer School Curling Robot Contest. This hands-on competition allowed students to apply their knowledge in designing, controlling, and programming robots in a competitive setting, offering a blend of practical experience and enjoyment.
