Dr. Hans Willmann, a senior human-resources officer at the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations, and Professor Edwin McDaniel from San Diego State University, offered students unique and engaging international classroom experiences.
Lectures
The summer school presented two core courses carefully designed for the participants. Dr. Hans Willmann, with 35 years of experience in the UN system as a senior human-resources officer at the WHO, conducted a workshop named “Practical Training for International Organization Talent”. From a human-resources perspective, Dr. Willmann systematically explained the application process and professional knowledge within the UN common system, using real-world cases and recruitment trends. For instance, he analyzed an internship position posted on the ICSC official recruitment platform and guided students on writing motivation letters and resumes. He also organized group mock interviews and presentations, which greatly improved the participants’ practical skills for applying to jobs in international organizations.
Professor Edwin McDaniel from San Diego State University taught a course titled “Global Communication in a Multicultural Society: Intercultural Communication in a Global Context”. Considering the irreversible trend of globalization and China’s rise, the course focused on cultural differences and communication challenges in various scenarios, such as business, education, and diplomacy. Through case studies, Professor McDaniel helped students understand how cultural value systems lead to behavioral differences in communication, ultimately establishing a “cognitive - analysis - practice” competency framework. This framework provided strong support for training talent for China’s external exchanges.
In addition, the program included a series of high-level lectures by well-known experts. These experts were Ambassador Yang Jin, the former Permanent Representative of China to UNESCO; Xue Yuxue, the former UNDP Resident Representative in Afghanistan and Indonesia; Li Donglin, the former Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Labor and Social Security; and Professor Su Hao from the Beijing Foreign Studies University. These lectures further broadened the participants’ understanding of global governance.
Graduation Ceremony
On the evening of July 17, the graduation ceremony was held in Room 117 of the Zhengxin Building. Foreign experts, division leaders, and all the participants attended. Two foreign teachers gave remarks as expert representatives, and four student representatives shared their learning experiences. Based on the course performance and recommendations from the foreign instructors, six participants were awarded the title of “Outstanding Participant”.
Closing Remarks
The Training Camp: Talents for International Organizations” Global Summer School is built on the foundational knowledge of HIT’s International Organizations and Global Governance Program and leverages the university’s high-quality resources in cross-cultural communication and country-specific research.
