The “Harmonic Analysis and Its Applications” Global Summer School was successfully held from June 30 to July 13 at Harbin Institute of Technology. Part of the 2024 Harbin Institute of Technology Global Summer School’s mathematics sub-project, the event was organized by the Undergraduate College in collaboration with the Institute of Mathematics and the School of Mathematics. Over 130 students from leading universities in China, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, and Wuhan University, participated, along with international attendees from the United States, France, Spain, and Russia. Additionally, more than 70 young experts and scholars contributed to the program.
The summer school adopted an innovative format, featuring “master lectures, expert teaching assistants, and cutting-edge reports”. Renowned speakers included Professor Pascal Auscher from Université Paris-Saclay, the former director of the French National Centre for Scientific Research; Professor Tuomas Hytönen from Aalto University, who has spoken at the International Congress of Mathematicians; and Professor José María Martell from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, who is the vice president of the Spanish National Academy of Sciences. They delivered three intensive courses on advanced topics in modern harmonic analysis, sharing their latest research discoveries and insights.
A team of six young scholars served as “expert teaching assistants,” providing two-hour evening sessions to assist students with questions and challenges related to the lectures. The summer school also included cutting-edge reports from 14 experts, such as Professor Zhang Zhifei from Peking University and Professor Wang Fengyu from Tianjin University, who discussed the latest developments and challenges in harmonic analysis and related fields.
Throughout the two weeks, the summer school offered a dynamic and engaging program. The master lectures were delivered in an increasingly detailed manner, the teaching assistants provided thoughtful support, and the expert reports showcased significant advancements in the field. Students actively engaged in their studies, demonstrating proactivity, reflection, and diligence.

“The faculty at this summer school was exceptional, and the quality of teaching was outstanding. The courses were thoughtfully designed to cater to students who had no prior background in harmonic analysis, enabling us to connect deeply with the main topics while also exploring advanced mathematical concepts. The integration of lectures with teaching assistants was especially effective. The teaching assistants diligently clarified any concepts and details that we struggled to understand during the lectures, greatly enhancing our comprehension of the material. Overall, I feel that this learning experience was incredibly rewarding.”
