From July 15 to July 27, 2024, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) hosted the “Intelligent Civil Engineering and Intelligent Construction” Global Summer School. This program, part of the 2024 HIT Global Summer School series, was organized by Undergraduate College and conducted by the School of Civil Engineering. Participants included students from Shandong University, Dalian University of Technology, South China University of Technology, and Xi’an Jiaotong University, along with three students from Russia representing Tomsk State University, Moscow State University of Oil and Gas, and Irkutsk National Research Technical University.
The summer school featured renowned experts such as Professor Michael Beer, Director of the Institute of Risk and Reliability at Leibniz University Hannover in Germany, and Professor Huang Zhenhua from the University of North Texas. They taught courses on mathematical problems in engineering mechanics and AI applications in civil engineering. Practical sessions included guidance from Beijing Construct Technology Co., Ltd., a pioneer in construction technology in China, and the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Harbin Institute of Technology. These sessions provided hands-on experience with engineering design software. Despite their diverse backgrounds, students collaborated closely, solving problems through brainstorming and teamwork, which led to the creation of innovative and practical projects. This experience enhanced their understanding of smart civil engineering and intelligent construction, stimulated their critical thinking, improved their practical skills, and showcased their exceptional learning and teamwork abilities.
Ye Zhixi from South China University of Technology
“The 2024 Global Summer School at Harbin Institute of Technology was an unforgettable experience. The comfortable accommodations and diverse activities enriched my learning. The advanced lectures expanded my knowledge, and the hands-on BIM practice allowed me to experience civil engineering firsthand. The visit to HIT highlighted the university’s rich history and academic environment. I also made many new friends and explored the Northeast region, gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for this area of China. Though the summer school was brief, its impact on me was profound. I will treasure these memories and the knowledge and experience gained here as I move forward.”
Li Gaocheng from Harbin Institute of Technology
“The instructors at this Global Summer School were outstanding, and the course design was thoughtfully structured to accommodate students with no prior BIM knowledge. The practical application of course content greatly broadened our understanding. I learned to use professional software like Revit and BIMbase, and made many international friends, enhancing my cultural awareness and building lasting friendships. The instructors were patient and supportive, creating a strong academic atmosphere. This experience was both enriching and significant, improving my professional knowledge and skills and demonstrating the value of international collaboration and cross-cultural exchange, which has had a lasting impact on my academic and personal growth.”
